If you live in Pittsburgh and you've never been to Fat Head's Saloon in the South Side, I have an assignment for you. Go into your bedroom or a bathroom - some place with a mirror. Now, take a good look at yourself. Raise your hand up near your head. Now slap yourself - shame on you. Shame on you for not taking advantage of such a plethora of deliciousness. Here, I'll help you out; it is located at 1805 East Carson Street, and the phone number is 412-431-7433. If you need a ride or a buddy to go with, you probably won't have to twist my arm - just ask.
My first bit of advise when planning your visit to Fat Head's: arrive hungry. With a sandwich section on the menu titled "Headwiches", you better believe that this place serves colossal size portions. The Headwiches are quite literally the size of a head.
(Speaking of Headwiches... this just reminded of me of something funny. My Grampy - the late, great Hank Boswell was famously known for malapropisms, or as we fondly referred to them "Hankims". When describing the food at Busch Garden's Oktoberfest to someone, he bluntly recommended that they try the "Barbarian Sandwich"... anyone else picturing a head between two slices of bread? What a guy that Hank, what a guy....)
I've been to Fat Head's Saloon several times, and I've never left disappointed..... full to the point where I needed to be rolled out of the restaurant, but never disappointed. Let's start with the mmmmmunchies: specifically the wing menu. Fat Head's doesn't mess around when it comes to wings. They're big and perfectly cooked - every time. An array of sauce choices such as Salt & Vinegar, Cajun Comfort, Jalapeno Cheddar and Beasty Barbecue (along with the traditional flavors) makes this place a to-go spot when you've got a hankering for good wings. The Fat Head's Original Sauce is full of awesome flavor and will clear up your sinuses.... just a heads up.
This menu is filled with many eye catching choices, but one that always stands out to people is a Headwich called the Artery Clogger. I personally appreciate the blunt reference in naming this not-so-healthy sandwich. What about it will clog your arteries? 2 fried eggs, ham, crispy bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo. And yes, it's the size of a head.
Here are a few of my Fat Head's favorites aside from the wings (in no particular order):
- Grilled Reuben - seriously the best Reuben ever. Nuff said.
- Nicole Burger - Unreal. It has cheese, fried onion crisps, lettuce, tomato and ranch dressing.
- Aloha Chicken Sandwich - Aloha, indeed, delicious sandwich. Grilled chicken breast, ham, provolone, grilled pineapple and Cajun Comfort sauce. Kowabunga.
- Mo Burger - topped with swiss cheese, sauteed peppers & onions, lettuce, rosemary mayo. You'll want some mo...
- ANY of the salads - honestly, they're all amazing.
- South Side Slopes - voted #5 Best Sandwich in USA by Maxim Magazine! This "little" wonder has kielbasa topped with fried pierogies, American cheese and horsey sauce. You don't get more Pittsburgh than that.
Any sandwich you order comes with either fresh homemade potato chips or french fries. And a mountain of them, at that. I should also mention that you can dine indoors, or when the weather is nice, you can eat on the "Fatio".
Are you a beer drinker? Welcome to heaven. There are 42 beers on tap - 42 GOOD beers on tap. Fat Head's serves beers from a couple of local breweries, many micro brews you may not have ever heard of, and they also have their own brew. "Handcrafted, unfiltered ales and lagers" such as Fat Head's Head Hunter IPA, Fat Head's #1 Saison, and Fat Head's Gudenhoppy Pilsner. The beer menu is always changing to accommodate seasonal brews as well (just wait until you see the pumpkin beer selection in the fall... ooh la la). I have more good news - Fat Head's has a six pack shop upstairs and now has growlers available, too!
So here is a really good sign about this place: deciding what you will order to drink and eat can take a really long time. There are just SO many good choices that I can assure you, if you go to Fat Head's once, you'll go again. I know I will!
